DYNO TESTING & TUNE DEVELOPMENT
Every tune is developed and verified on our in-house dyno under controlled conditions. We don't guess performance; we measure it.

Supported Brands
Tuning an outboard 'by ear' on the water is outdated and risky. Our dyno testing allows us to monitor critical parameters like knock, air-fuel ratio, and exhaust gas temperatures to ensure your tune is both powerful and perfectly safe. This rigorous development process is what separates a professional ECU calibration from a generic, unverified flash.

Why choose us for Dyno Testing & Tune Development?
Measured Results
We know exactly how much horsepower and torque your engine makes before and after.
Controlled Environment
Dyno cells provide consistent conditions, eliminating variables like wind and current.
Knock Monitoring
Advanced sensors ensure your engine operates safely without dangerous detonation.
Data-Driven Development
Our tunes are built on hard data, not guesswork.
What's included in our Dyno Testing & Tune Development service
- Controlled load testing across the RPM range
- Air-fuel ratio (AFR) monitoring
- Ignition timing optimization
- Before and after performance verification
- Data logging of critical engine parameters

Our process
Baseline Run
We establish the factory power output and baseline data.
Data Analysis
We analyze the factory calibration to identify areas for improvement.
Tune Adjustments
Precise changes are made to fuel, ignition, and throttle maps.
Verification
The engine is run again to verify safe, reliable power gains.

The Anatomy of a Marine Dyno Test
A marine dynamometer (dyno) is a highly specialized piece of equipment designed to simulate the exact loads a boat hull places on an outboard engine. Unlike a car dyno where tires roll on a drum, an outboard dyno connects directly to the prop shaft or uses a specialized water brake system to apply precise, measured resistance against the engine's output. This allows us to hold the engine at specific RPMs and throttle positions while measuring the exact torque being produced.
During a dyno run, the engine is instrumented with a suite of sensors that go far beyond what the factory ECU monitors. We install wideband oxygen sensors in the exhaust to measure the exact Air-Fuel Ratio (AFR) in real-time. We use acoustic knock sensors to listen for any signs of pre-ignition or detonation (pinging) that could damage the engine. We monitor exhaust gas temperatures (EGT), water pressure, and block temperatures. This massive influx of data allows our calibrators to see exactly how the engine is responding to every tiny adjustment in the software.
Why On-Water Tuning is a Guessing Game
Historically, many marine mechanics attempted to tune outboards 'on the water.' They would flash a file, take the boat for a run, look at the GPS speed, and try to listen to the engine over the sound of wind and waves. This method is fundamentally flawed and highly dangerous for the longevity of your engine. On the water, you cannot accurately measure torque curves. You cannot monitor AFR without drilling into the exhaust. Most importantly, you cannot hear engine knock until it is severe enough to cause catastrophic piston failure.
Furthermore, on-water testing introduces infinite variables. A change in tide, wind direction, water chop, or even the amount of fuel in the tank can skew speed results, making it impossible to know if a software change actually improved power or if you just caught a tailwind. Our in-house dyno testing eliminates all environmental variables. If our dyno shows a 25-horsepower increase at 4500 RPM, that is a hard, indisputable mathematical fact. It is this commitment to data-driven development that makes our mail-in ECU tuning the most reliable in Australia.
The P.O.A. Development Standard
When you utilize our mail-in service, the file flashed to your ECU is the direct result of our exhaustive dyno development program. When a new outboard model is released, we acquire one and mount it to our dyno cell. We spend days, sometimes weeks, running baseline tests to understand the factory calibration's strengths and weaknesses. We map the entire volumetric efficiency of the engine block.
We then begin the iterative process of tuning. We adjust ignition timing degree by degree, holding the engine at high loads to ensure no knock occurs even when the engine is heat-soaked. We manipulate the electronic throttle to remove the artificial lag manufacturers program in. We lean out the cruise areas for economy and richen the top end for safety and power. Only when a calibration has survived hours of punishing dyno testing and proven to deliver consistent, safe, and powerful results does it become an approved Performance Outboards Australia tune ready for our customers.
